The Curse of NOW
Written by Frank Rich on July 21, 2018
Time is an asset, maybe our greatest asset, as we can never get it back, so we need to pay close attention to how we either invest or spend our time.

It seems like almost everyday there are new technologies or services available to us to limit the amount of time we have to spend doing unnecessary tasks or just making our lives run smoother overall.

Self checkout has made the process of buying groceries so much easier and time efficient.

We can have a car pick us up or bring us food within minutes just by pushing a button on our phone.

No need to go to the bank, just take a picture of your check with your bank app and the money will be deposited within a few days.

Don’t know the answer to a question or need a piece of information right NOW? Just ask Siri, Alexa, or Google and the answer will be yours within seconds.

We could go on and on with that list, but you get the point…
But what about our bodies? Can we change those NOW, and skip the process of doing the work and have the body we desire?
  •  Liposuction to remove unnecessary and unwanted bodyfat
  •  Abdominal etching to give you the sought after 6 pack you’ve dreamt about for years
  •  Gluteal Augmentation (also know as butt implants), where you will have artificial implants placed within the glutes to enhance the shape and size of butt
  •  SEO injections or synthol to increase the size of smaller or lagging bodyparts (most commonly used by bodybuilders and other fitness competitors)
And that’s just to list a few…

So as you can see, yes, if someone wanted to alter, or change their appearance immediately, there are many options available to them. They could “become a new person” in a very short time, to the point that others close to them may not recognize them, or possible even congratulate them for all the hard work and transformation.

Sounds appealing doesn’t it?

Remember WIlly Wonka and the Chocolate Factory?

Of course you do, it was every kid's fantasy. Find a golden ticket and get to spend the day inside the world’s greatest candy factory!

When you first watched this movie as a kid, you probably enjoyed it for some of the humor, you maybe thought the Oompa Loompas were really cool, and maybe even dreamt about one day getting to spend a day inside your own factory.

What you probably didn’t catch at the time, if you first saw this movie as a young child, were the lessons embedded into the storyline, those lessons about the parent/child relationship and how to raise children to “be good”.

And these just weren’t lessons for childhood, but lessons that can be carried over into our adult lives, and if applied successfully and followed through with, can having us living productive and fulfilling lives, working on ourselves everyday to grow and become better versions of ourselves.

Remember Veruca Salt? She was the bratty daughter of the billionaire in the red dress. Well she loved the geese that laid the golden egg, so much that she wanted her father to buy her one. AND SHE WANTED IT NOW! She couldn’t understand that the geese weren’t for sale…

She wanted it NOW!!!

And the problem was that her father up until that point had given her everything she ever wanted, immediately.

Well what ending up happening to Veruca Salt when she tried to take matters into her own hands and grab the geese for herself? She was deemed a “bad egg”, and dropped down to the garbage chute which lead to the furnace.

So you want that perfect physique? (Your golden egg?)

The first thing you need to realize is that we are all limited by our genetic potential, and the physique that you see gracing the cover of a fitness magazine or winning the physique/bodybuilding show may not be within reach for you.

But that shouldn’t discourage you from chasing your dreams, and working hard towards your goal. Becoming the “best you” should be a goal. And because you can always improve upon where you are today, it isn’t about reaching the goal and feeling accomplished and quitting, fitness and living a healthy lifestyle is about progressing daily, make small improvements for the rest of our lives.

Too many people get caught up with how they look, and how they are seen by others, that they will go to extreme measures to get that body now, forgetting that this is about the journey, and not about what you look like at the end, but about “WHO” you become.
Overcoming obstacles and challenges along the way in your fitness journey is going to give you the confidence and tools needed to live a successful life in whatever other endeavor you decide to take.
